City Rail Link series part 4: Newton the forgotten city fringe

The suburb drenched with history with plenty to gain

October 30, 2020

Newton is less than 3 kilometres from Britomart in Auckland’s CBD, but due to poor public transport connections the travel time takes around 20-30 minutes by bus (depending on traffic) or around 35 minutes on foot.

It is known as a rather rundown albeit artsy quarter with edgy galleries, vintage clothing stores, and buzzing nightlife all on K Road. The sheer majority of commercial buildings are now aged, arguably not fit-for-purpose, and built with increasingly shoddy looking materials.

However, the CRL is expected to make it up to 10 times faster to get to and from the Auckland CBD. In an age where time is the most precious commodity, this would clearly define the location as being wholly transformational.
