Innovative thinking for AstraZeneca

New Milan HQ fosters innovative thinking and collaborative working, achieving LEED Gold interior certification

Challenge

For its new Milan Headquarters in an old pavilion in the Expo 2015 area, AstraZeneca sought to root the space in wellbeing and sustainability.

Solution

The existing envelope, LEED Gold certified, offered a space flooded with natural light across two levels, with a strong relationship between indoor and outdoor areas.

JLL’s design and build company Tétris took a holistic approach to the exterior and interiors, leveraging natural light, fluid and interconnected spaces to foster collaborative working.

Whenever possible Tétris reused furniture such as tables and chairs to avoid waste and promote recycling, and sustainable materials were prioritized to minimize human and environmental health impacts, including Cradle-to-Cradle certified ones.

Results

We have breathed new life into an old building, enabling Astra Zeneca to achieve an innovative environment to help continue to spark innovation.

By applying the Tétris Sustainability Code, we worked with AstraZeneca to elevate the sustainability credentials of the project, making it Tétris’s first project to achieve a LEED GOLD Interior certification in Italy.

The project won the Interior, Italy, Workplace category at the BigSEE Interior Design Awards 2022, and has been selected as one of the finalists to compete for the Grand Prix Award in the Workplace category
