What this job involves

We are looking for a commercially focussed Portfolio Accountant to join our Property & Asset Management team located in our central Auckland office overlooking the harbour.

You will be responsible for all aspects of accounting and reporting for a portfolio of properties that will expose you to several different types of clients ensuring that our client's property requirements are delivered and service expectations are met and exceeded. You will help the business to achieve best practice performance levels across our offices in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Reporting to the Head of Property & Asset Management, you will be responsible for all aspects of accounting and reporting for a portfolio of properties.

Duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Facilitate Accounts Payable invoice coding and approval
  • Prepare documentation payment runs for the properties in your portfolio – including a review of the current trust fund levels
  • Preparation of funds requests to landlords as required, including liaising with property managers regarding same
  • Investigate and resolve any account queries as required
  • Responsible for Accounts Payable month end and year close (including reconciliation) for properties in your portfolio
  • Deal with any tenant queries and communication in a timely and professional manner.
  • Sundry client specific reports and analysis; and
  • P&L variance analysis.

All aspects of preparing monthly financial statements for property management clients; including:

  • Review of purchase orders for appropriate accrual in month end financial statements
  • Review all expenses, create and post required journals for miscoding and any other amendments
  • Prepare and process manual expense accruals; and
  • Monthly balance Sheet account reconciliations.

Ideally you will be a CA qualified accountant, or being working towards your qualification; or have comprehensive experience working in a commercial environment. This role could also suit an experienced Assistant Accountant who is looking to step up their commercial experience.

We'll expect you to also have some key skills and experience including:

  • Solid accounting experience working at a senior level in a corporate environment
  • A high level of attention to detail and accuracy
  • The ability to work fairly independently in a deadline driven environment
  • Proficient Excel skills - pivot tables, formulas and v-lookups
  • Knowledge of MRI would be advantageous, although not essential
  • Exceptional communication and time management skills
  • The ability to build and foster successful working relationships with internal team and external clients
  • High level of professionalism, reliability with a service delivery focus
  • Hands-on practical approach and willing to take responsibility for their own portfolio
  • Property or services' experience is highly regarded but not essential.
